Keep an eye out for the triple butt flip

By Kate Peters

The top slackline pros from around the world – hailing from Peru, Spain, Switzerland and Japan – are displaying their bionic balance in Vail on their final leg of the US Pro Series. After a demanding schedule including Dominion RiverRock and X Games, everyone’s got their eye on the ultimate prize this weekend: a piece of the prize purse in addition to the top spots in the ISI World Ranking.

Athletes are throwing tricks that were unthinkable last year, a sure sign of exponential growth for the sport. This year’s “trick to stick” is the triple butt flip. Involving a butt bounce, then spinning three times followed by a final butt bounce. The triple butt flip has yet to be successfully landed during competition. But that could all change this weekend.

There are three women competing this year, a new and exciting development for a historically male-dominated sport, and Japan’s Mio Sudo is one to watch, holding her own against the guys.

In addition to catching the competition, don’t forget to head over to the I-bridge for the Highline Demos. Heather Larsen, Marcus Nelson and Taylor VanAllen will be showcasing tricks you see on all different kinds of lines, with a Mountain Games twist, of course. They will be rocking the line over the water, as kayak and SUP compete for the crowd’s attention below.
