The Winter Mountain Games Preview event in Vail got under way this weekend with the Skimo Individual race on Vail Mountain at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25. Action continues throughout the weekend with three days of free concerts in Vail Village: 5K, 10K, and Dog Derby Snowshoe events, the Fat Tire Bike Challenge, the TINCUP Skimo Sprint, Skimo Vertical, and the Skimo Citizens Vertical.

The full Winter Mountain Games schedule of events is available HERE.

The event is hosted by the nonprofit Vail Valley Foundation, which also hosts the summertime GoPro Mountain Games. Summer GoPro Mountain Games registration IS NOW OPEN. The summertime event will celebrate 20 years when it gets underway June 7-12, 2022 in Vail. Organizers say the return of a complete schedule of events for the summer GoPro Mountain Games, as well as the return of the Winter Mountain Games, is being welcomed by locals and international adventure athletes alike.

“It’s the question I’ve gotten more than any other question during my time at the Vail Valley Foundation: ‘When is Winter Mountain Games coming back?'” said Tom Boyd, spokesperson for the Vail Valley Foundation, which also hosts several signature international events in the Vail Valley including the Xfinity Birds of Prey Audi FIS Ski World Cup and the Vail Dance Festival, along with the winter and summer versions of the Mountain Games.

“We hosted the Winter Mountain Games for two years in 2012-13. Since then, every time I talk with an adventure sports athlete or a local they want to know when we’re bringing the Winter Mountain Games back. Well, I can finally say the answer is, ‘NOW!'”

Boyd said this year’s event is a “Preview” event because of the pandemic.

“Planning a multi-disciplinary mountain sports, music, and lifestyle event during the pandemic presented some significant challenges,” Boyd said. “This year we are giving the world a ‘preview’ of what a complete and fully-fledged Winter Mountain Games will look like when the event returns in full in 2023.”
